Mackinac Bridge (Mich.) audio CDs, 1954,1958.

Collection includes audio CDs reformatted from the original sound recordings created at WSOO, Sault Ste. Marie (Mich.). The first CD is of Senator Prentiss Brown speaking at the Mackinac Bridge dinner on March 6, 1954, and the second is of the Mackinac Bridge Dedication events of June 27-28, 1958. Master audio CD copies of each recording are also included. Senator Brown on the first CD jokes about how his wife refused to cross the bridge until the dinner speakers discussed the fine workmanship of the bridge. Also, he notes the various organizations which supported creating and financing the bridge, and prior bridge authorities. His speech is recorded on two tracks, the first lasting eight minutes and 39 seconds, and the second lasting nine minutes and 48 seconds. The dedication CD was recorded partially by unidentified radio personalities, probably from Sault Ste. Marie (Mich.). The first speaker is clearly a professional narrator who reads a public relations piece noting that the dedication of the bridge represents "A moment in history"...representing "the spirit of man's conquest over the obstacles of nature." The sound of fireworks on the evening of June 27, 1958 leads to a second unidentified voice, obviously a radio announcer, describing the crowds at Mackinaw City, on Mackinaw Island, at St. Ignace, and on board ships, boats, and tankers, many of which can be heard tooting their horns in the background, to see "the pride of Michigan." A number of speakers then each briefly speak, including: Senator Prentiss M. Brown, Chairman of the Mackinac Bridge Authority; Governor G. Mennen Williams; Roger M. Blough, Chairman of the Board of U. S. Steel Corporation; Dr. David B. Steinman, designer of the bridge; August Shoal, head of the Michigan State AFL-CIO; Wilber M. Brucker, previously Governor of Michigan, then Secretary of the Army, who reads a letter dated June 24, 1958 bringing good wishes from President Dwight D. Eisenhauer; and Dwight Sisler, General Chair of the Detroit Education Committee who presents a thank you award to Brown. At the very end of the second recording the professional narrator's voice briefly notes how the bridge is an "enduring monument of vision, faith, and courage" as an organ plays "My country 'tis of thee." The second CD has two tracks, the first lasting seven minutes and 53 seconds, and the second lasting eight minutes.
